There has been a lot of talk (and sometimes debate) about compostable bags in environmentalist circles recently – this sudden rise in public interest isn’t surprising, considering that everything from baby diapers to plastic water bottles are being marketed as “biodegradable” or “compostable” these days.
Clearly, some of these commercial products fall sort of being sustainable, but compostable bags can go either way. Not every brand is green, but the ones that are happen to be absolutely fantastic!
How to Recognize Eco-Friendly Compostable Bags
Certain types of compostable bags are undeniably green – recycled paper, upcycled fabric, and re-usable mesh lawn bags made from organic materials are a few fabulous examples.
Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to find these sustainable solutions on store shelves because of strict competition from cheaply produced synthetics. Don’t give up the search, though! Your ideal green bag IS out there somewhere!

Some bio-plastics are nothing more than regular plastic with a slightly higher rate of decomposition, but a few eco-friendly varieties are 100% compostable, infused with microbe-attracting natural nutrients, and leave nothing but basic substances like water and biomass behind. These are more difficult to find but the benefits are totally worth the search.
Yes, compostable garbage bin liners are extremely green – but only if you’re using the right kind! Don’t fall for slick marketing ploys that claim a product is environmentally friendly unless you have access to the facts: what are the bags made of? What happens when they’re thrown away? Will they degrade at home, or only in industrial composting facilities?
Don’t worry, when you find the right compostable bags you’ll never need to look for another brand again!
